Seeing a West End show is one of the most popular things to do whilst visiting London but can also be one of the most expensive. Follow our tips to get the most out of your night out in buzzing Theatreland…
Book a deal online
Cheap West End theatre breaks are best sought out online. If you check the face value of the ticket first you will know what kind of dealing you’re getting. The range of productions to choose from is massive and your decision will probably depend on who you’re taking with you. The Lion King, for instance is a real favourite with kids, whereas something romantic like Dirty Dancing is perfect if you’re going on a date. In addition to all the feel-good musicals, a number of more high-brow plays are also on offer. Samuels Beckett’s Waiting for Godot is a current best-seller.
Take advantage of discounted parking
While most theatre-goers normally travel by tube or bus, there is now a discounted parking scheme for those driving into the West End. Westminster City Council offers 50% off participating car parks throughout Theatreland. All you need to do is take your parking ticket to the theatre to be validated by box office staff and your discount will be issued on your return to the car park. Please note, not all theatres are taking part so check ahead.
Eat first – book a theatre and dinner package
West End Shows tend to be around three hours long so it is advisable to eat beforehand. A great way of saving money is to book a theatre and dinner package. Participating restaurants are all situated close-by and tend to offer a special theatre menu where you get a choice of around three or four starters, mains and puddings. Drinks are not usually included, but many premises offer happy hours from about 5pm so get there early.
Get there in plenty of time
Sounds simple but make sure you get to the theatre in plenty of time, that way you can enjoy a pre-drink at the bar first and won’t face the embarrassment of stepping over rows and rows of people in the auditorium. If you’re too late you may even be refused entry.
Pre-order drinks for the break
If you’re wanting drinks for the performance break, make sure you pre-book your order with the bar staff before the show begins, that way you’ll be guaranteed a drink without contending with queues and queues of theatre-goers as soon as the curtain comes down. Another tip is to ask for it in a plastic cup and you can take it back to your seat with you.
