Few destinations can match the small Canary Island of Lanzarote for drama.  As here during the 1730´s enormous eruptions took place – which have left much of the island looking like something out of a science fiction film.  With mile after mile of twisted lava and hundreds of burnt out peaks.

Indeed the scenery here is sufficiently surreal and dramatic to have been used as backdrop by many filmmakers over the years.  And most recently Clash of the Titans 3, the new sci fi epic starring Liam Neeson was partly shot on location here.

Away from the volcanic interior though Lanzarote is a more conventional holiday destination boasting lots of great beaches and excellent weather.  Thanks to the island´s location close to the coast of West Africa.

As a result holidays in Lanzarote are popular during the winter as well as the summer.  With the island welcoming around 1.4 million foreign tourists during the course of an average year.  All of whom touch down at the sole airport located just outside the capital city of Arrecife.

The fastest growing resort on the island is called Playa Blanca – named after the white beach that lies at its heart.  There are plenty of good quality hotels and villas in Playa Blanca for visitors to enjoy – many of them enjoying great seafront locations and wonderful views across to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura.  Playa Blanca is also a shrewd choice during the winter months as this part of Lanzarote enjoys a great microclimate.

There are two other main resorts – both of which are a good twenty years older than Playa Blanca.  Puerto del Carmen is the largest and most popular destination – located very close to the airport in the centre of the island.  Whilst Costa Teguise is located to the north of the island and was purpose built during the 1980´s.

Wherever tourists stay it is always advisable to book car hire in Lanzarote.  As there is loads to do and see with many of these attractions inaccessible by public bus service.  Fortunately rental rates are very cheap and the roads are safe and quiet once outside of the main resorts.

Visitors should make sure they take in the volcanoes of the Timanfaya National Park whilst the many creations of Cesar Manrique also top many itineraries.  There are also loads of pretty little villages and towns to explore such as Haria and Yaiza.
